August 02, 2005, San Diego, Ca. - WiggleWireless, an interactive mobile marketing company connecting people to the information they want via mobile messaging, connected fans to a record 11,290 finishers at the 28th annual San Francisco Marathon in July. Adding to the complexity of the event, runners simultaneously participated in the 26.2-mile marathon as well as two half-marathons and a 5-K. Thanks to WiggleWireless' customized athlete tracking service, fans were able to track runners from all four events remotely and on-site through their mobile phones.
"The San Francisco Marathon is definitely the most technically challenging marathon to collect and deliver real-time athlete tracking to mobile phone users," said Jeff Pokonosky, president and founder of WiggleWireless. "We collect timing data from four different races and over 11,000 runners simultaneously - and then deliver this data seamless to mobile phone users everywhere. It was a challenge.”
Those who signed up with WiggleWireless followed the runners as they ran through the early miles along the San Francisco Bay waterfront and then, for the first time in years, ran over the Golden Gate Bridge.
Among the athletes tracked by fans was San Francisco's Marian Lyons who, at 58, successfully completed her 100th marathon, and Doug Lang, a 71 year-old man from Glendale, California who successfully completed his 400th marathon.
People who wished to track the athletes simply went online and selected the channel and athlete they wanted to track. Channels included; individual athlete tracking, race-day updates, weather and more. Visit www.wigglewireless.com for more information on the event.
